2 hours of Rammstein - sorry neighbors! :)

My boyfriend and I have been planning on moving to Hamburg, Germany, so taking German this term and next has been extremely important for me. He has family in Hamburg and speaks German, so he’s been tutoring me this term. It’s been nice to have someone to speak German with at home. Any time I have a question while I’m working on my homework, he’s been able to explain things to me. He'll give me impromptu lessons while we cook dinner or fold the laundry. Those long talks have been very valuable as I tend to have a lot of "ah-ha!" moments during them. He usually finds something I've been struggling to understand and explains it in a new way so my confusion gets resolved. When we go on long car rides, we listen to Rammstein and he sometimes translates the lyrics for me. They’re his favorite band so we’re constantly listening to it at home and in the car.

For the last 2 hours of my culture blog, we thought it would be interesting to have me sit down and listen to a few songs from their albums starting from the 90’s to more recent stuff so I could hear how their music progressed. While I did that, I used the website http://en.affenknecht.com/lyrics/ to follow along with the songs. I was able to hear the pronunciation of the words as I read them, and then read the translation to English. When I watched the movie the other day, I understood more than I thought I would and today was no different. I’m glad I waited until the end of the term to do this because of how many words I know from the last few chapters. I can’t believe I am as familiar as I am after only one term. Crazy!

While Rammstein’s lyrics are rather shocking and dark, they are surprisingly poetic. I’ve always enjoyed their music simply because they’re talented musicians that have put out music I really like the style of, but this has given me a new perspective. I know my boyfriend was excited to have me understand his favorite band better! :) German is a harsh language, but, well this is hard to explain. I guess it feels more melodic now that I have a simple understanding of how it works. There’s a pattern that’s becoming familiar to me and I’m constantly excited with how much I’m able to understand!
